The Vision

Like so many great ideas, it started with a sketch on a napkin. Where others saw a drainage ditch, a waterway was envisioned. Where some saw a traditional “bedroom” community, a new hometown came to life.  It began 36 years ago as the vision of George P. Mitchell, independent oil and gas entrepreneur and founder of Mitchell Energy & Development Corp.  This visionary man studied other communities across the country and the challenges they faced, and saw the need for a thoughtfully planned community where families and businesses could live in harmony with nature.  In 1974, The Woodlands was born and has thrived over the years, through upturns and downturns, to become one of America’s largest and most successful master-planned communities.

The Woodlands Development Company guides the development of The Woodlands and keeps the vision intact.  Development of The Woodlands Town Center is one of the primary goals of the Company now and in the years to come.  Since the genesis of Town Center more than 30 years ago, plans have evolved and been refined by some of the top urban designers and architects in the country. The vision is reaching fruition. Town Center has become a thriving downtown in the forest that is home to high profile companies and a popular destination for residents and visitors alike.
